A wheel with mounted tire brings together a lot of weight and a sensitive surface. A suitable packaging must therefore protect the rim, stabilize the wheel within the shipment and fit the booked transport. Plan shipping using the ready-packed wheel instead of just looking at the tyre diameter.
Clear transport conditions before packing
Ask the selected transport service which packaging form is approved for wheels and rims. Depending on the service, a completely closed carton, a special wheel pack or a pallet may be required. Also the permissible dimensions, the total weight and possible specifications for several wheels differ. Rules for loose tyres cannot be automatically transferred to wheels with mounted rim.
Measure and weigh each wheel including the planned packaging. A set of four wheels is not an ordinary light package. Therefore, vote whether each wheel is individually packaged or a common transport solution is provided. To select the carton and the upholstery material to match the actual load.
Protecting Sensitive Surfaces
Remove loose dirt and let wet surfaces dry. Cover the front of the rim with a suitable soft intermediate layer. A sufficiently firm cover made of corrugated board can provide additional protection against contact with other objects. Also pay attention to the rim rim and protruding parts, such as the valve.
The cover must not move when lifting. Adhesive tape should not adhere directly to painted or polished surfaces. Use it to connect the packaging layers. Stretch film can hold these layers together, but it does not replace pressure-resistant cover and an appropriate outer carton.
Stabilize the wheel in the outer carton
Choose a corrugated app packaging whose design and specified load capacity match the total weight. In the carton, the wheel needs sufficient distance to the outer walls and a stable support. Fill remaining gaps so that the heavy wheel does not hit a side wall while moving. Loose filling material alone can slip in case of a heavy shipment.
Close the intended openings and carton seams with suitable packing tape. Check that the floor remains closed and stable during careful lifting. The carton should not be dented or punctured in sharp places.
Prepare a clear and manageable shipment
Place the shipping label on a flat, permanently adhesive surface and remove old shipping markings. Keep the required grips free without cutting holes into a closed packaging. Finally, check the dimensions, weight and requirements of the transport service again. Careful packaging reduces risks; it is not a guarantee of undamaged transport.
