A good package identification helps to assign a shipment and to recognize hints on how to deal with its content. Address labels, handling symbols and material information have different tasks. They complement a suitable packaging structure but cannot replace it.
The most important handling instructions
| Symbol or Note | Meaning for handling |
|---|---|
| Fragile, often a glass | Sensitive content; especially careful handling. |
| Two arrows up | Maintain the given orientation. |
| Umbrella | Protect from moisture. |
| Batch Limit | Do not exceed the specified load or number. |
| Do not roll | Do not move the packaging by rolling. |
Select understandable pictograms and, if necessary, supplement a short German note. A label “Frail” does not mean that a parcel service has promised a special manual treatment. Upholster and fix the goods so that the normal transport load is taken into account.
Address labels and barcodes
The shipping label shall include, depending on the service, consignee, consignor, consignment number and machine-readable codes. Use the file created by the shipping service. Print them in the intended size and place them on a flat, clearly visible surface. Folds, edges, closure seams and highly reflective overgluing make scanning difficult.
In the case of re-used cartons, old shipping labels and misleading indications must be removed or completely unrecognised. Adjust necessary orientation information on the packaging, so that they remain recognizable during handling.
Label or direct print?
Self-adhesive labels offer clear contours and can be flexibly labeled. They are also suitable for changing recipients and goods. It is crucial that adhesive and carrier material fit the surface and the transport conditions.
Direct printing on cardboard can be practical in recurring processes. On brown or rough corrugated board contrast and legibility may be different than on a white label. Check especially barcodes in the real packing process. Whether thermal printing, inkjet printing or any other technology is economical depends on device, quantity and durability requirement.
Material marks are not transport instructions
Material markings help to identify the structure of a packaging. They do not automatically say that the local collection system accepts any material. A logo to participate in a withdrawal system is also not a general proof that an item can be recycled on site. A statement on compostability, in turn, must be compared with the local waste management rules.
Treatment of special markings separately
Dangerous goods, temperature sensitive goods and special transport processes may require additional specifications. General labels do not replace the required classification and labelling. The Polish original contains partly older or differently classified symbol examples; these are not taken over here as shipping regulations for Germany.
Temperature or shock indicators can provide information about an event if they are chosen and properly fitted. Pre-determine how recipients and dispatch partners should assess the display. For ordinary packages, a well-readable shipping marking along with a carefully packed, properly sealed carton is usually sufficient.
