The embossed inside of a structured vacuum bag supports the way of the air to the suction opening with the equipment provided for this purpose. A suitable bag is therefore a technical prerequisite for processing. Compare bag type, dimensions and application with the instructions of your vacuum cleaner instead of choosing only according to material thickness or appearance.
Structured and smooth sachets distinguish
Many external vacuuming machines use structured bags or corresponding rollers. The embossing forms ducts through which air can be moved while suctioning. Smooth bags are used, among other things, for chamber vacuumizers designed for this purpose. Which version your device needs is the result of the manufacturer’s specifications; exceptions and special device functions should be explicitly checked.
An inappropriate bag can affect the airflow or welding. However, it does not follow that with every bad result, the bag is automatically the only source of error. Also check the position in the device, the seal, the clean welding area and the intended workflow. If you have recurring problems, follow the device instructions.
Check material and dimensions after application
Vacuum bags may consist of multilayer material combinations, for example: PA and PE. For the selection, the specific product details are food contact, processing and permitted use. Material reductions alone do not prove suitable for any food or temperature range. For freezing, heating or sous vide applications, the respective bag must be explicitly indicated.
Choose a format that offers enough space for the content and a free welding area. Note the maximum bag width of your device. In the case of rollers, you also need to make a bottom closure according to the instructions. Sharp components or sharp edges in the contents can damage the film; only use a suitable protective solution, which is allowed by the intended packaging process.
Keep the welding area clean and check the result
Keep the edge free of wrinkles, food residues and liquid, as far as the chosen method requires. Insert the bag after the device instruction and select the settings. Then check the weld seam and the bag for visible damage. An incomplete seam should not be regarded simply as a usable closure.
Label the portion with the contents and packaging date. So similar-looking portions remain distinguishable. Store unused bags clean and dry; damaged or contaminated specimens should not be used for new food portions.
Vacuum bags are no guarantee of durability
Vacuuming does not replace hygiene or required cooling. A dense packaging is not a proof of food safety or a certain storage period. Follow the instructions on the respective foods. The BfR explains risks in uncooled food under air closure; a flat-rate promise of freshness is therefore not an appropriate selection aid.
