When unpacking an order, the outer box is quickly opened. After that, there are often several materials left. A short, orderly procedure helps to store usable packaging and to feed the rest to the appropriate collection system.
Separate content and packaging
First take out the goods and all related documents. Then remove upholstery, insoles and bags. Thus, small accessories cannot accidentally disappear with the packaging material. Also check if the packaging is needed for a possible return.
Three material groups form
- Paper and paperboard: clean outer cartons, paper fillers and suitable paper covers.
- Plastic and composites: Films, air cushions, foil bags and non-separable multi-layer packaging.
- Special cases: heavily polluted materials or packaging with problematic residues.
Separate easily detachable inserts from the outer shell. An air cushion envelope must be assessed according to its actual structure; a paper-like surface does not make the whole packaging waste paper.
Observe the German collective rules
Clean paper and cardboard packaging is basically part of the waste paper collection. Residual empty packaging made of plastic, metal and composites is usually collected over yellow ton or yellow sack. Regional recyclable tons and special materials may have different rules. The Federal Environment Agency for Waste SeparationIn some cases, the local wasteABC.
Hardly greasy cardboard or cardboard contaminated with food residues does not belong in the clean stream of paper. Chemically contaminated films are also not subject to a standard rule for normal shipping packaging. Clear such cases with the disposer.
Check reusable material
A dry, undamaged carton can be reused if size and stability are sufficient for the next content. Remove old shipping data. Intact bubble wrap and clean cushion paper can also be useful. However, do not pack a sensitive product in weakened cardboard just to continue using a carton.
Fold suitable boxes flat and store filling material ordered. Keep only quantities that you are expected to need. A clear supply is actually used; a growing pile of damaged packaging usually does not.
Reduce waste even during your own shipment
Choose a suitable carton size and use as much protective material as you need. If possible, describe the packaging materials contained in it in an understandable way so that recipients can separate them. The protection of the goods remains crucial: too tight upholstery can cause additional effort due to transport damage and replacement deliveries.
