A prepared loading unit with suitable belts is held together during the strapping process. However, a useful structure consists of more than the belt alone: packages, pallets, edge protection, closures and tools must be coordinated with each other. Plan the procedure on the basis of the specific goods and the intended transport load.
Check the loading unit before strapping
First, check the pallet and the packages on it. Damaged cartons, open packaging and unstable stacks cannot be compensated by any tight straps. Arrange the goods in such a way that the loading unit is prepared in a stable form. Consider the permissible load on the packaging and the information on the stackability of the contents.
Determine at which points the tapes should run. These positions must fit the construction of the pallet and the packages. In the case of new or demanding loads, a professional assessment should form the basis. A general number of bands or a universal clamping force cannot be derived from the material name.
PP- or PETSelect tape according to the product data
PP and PET are common materials for strapping bands. They are offered in different widths, strengths and designs. Compare the technical specifications of the specific volume with the requirements of your application. The appropriate choice, for example, depends on the shape and weight of the loading unit as well as on the clamping and locking system used.
Also check the release of the tool for material and bandwidth. A clamping device or a locking sleeve that matches a specific design is not automatically suitable for any other. Use the combinations provided by the system manufacturer and take its operating instructions into account. The colour of the tape does not replace a robust technical specification.
Use edge protection and closures appropriately
Edge protection elements can complement the contact points between tape and packaging. They must be placed so that they do not slip when tensioning and fit to the dimensions of the loading unit. In particular, check sensitive cardboard edges and product surfaces. Too high a tension can damage the packaging, even if the tape itself remains intact.
Run, tighten and close the tape according to the procedure provided. Keep your hands and body away from possible setback areas and observe the protective measures of the tool manual. Then assess the closure, seat of the edge protection and visible damage. Replace faulty connections instead of relying on their external impression.
Testing packaging and transport together
For recurring loading units, document a suitable working method with the materials and controls used. Maturation is part of the packaging; it does not replace any necessary load securing in the vehicle. Coordination with the responsible specialists and practical packaging tests will help to assess new combinations of goods. Cut off band pieces should be removed immediately from running paths and collected according to local specifications.
