A soft foam layer can separate sensitive surfaces in a packaging and provide additional protection depending on the design. After unpacking, it must first be clarified which material actually exists. PE-foam, EPS and other foams look partly similar, but are not identical. For further use and disposal, material declaration, condition and original function are crucial.
Differentiating packaging foam from other foam products
PE stands for polyethylene. A correspondingly designated packaging pad can be used as a web, cut or molded part. The colour alone is not sufficient to determine the material. Check existing labels or product description. A foam from a construction application is also not automatically disposed of in the same way as a household product packaging.
Investigate the location for cracks, dirt and permanently pressed areas. A damaged mold may lose its intended protective effect. Do not arrange it as an equivalent replacement for new, matchingly selected upholstery. For sensitive surfaces, cleanliness, possible abrasion marks and suitability for the specific product must also be taken into account.
Use suitable clean parts again
Clean, undamaged foam webs can, for example, be helpful in repackaging as an intermediate layer. Check whether size and strength match the new task. A thin sheet separates surfaces, but cannot fix a freely movable heavy object in the carton. Use supplementary upholstery or appropriate mold inserts if the content requires this protection.
Store reusable cuts dry and so that they are not dirty or deformed. Remove loose adhesive strips carefully. For direct food contact; or ESDsensitive electronics is a general foam web without adequate aptitude indication not sufficient evidence. Use the materials provided for this purpose and the instructions of the respective product manufacturer.
Material and origin determine the collection route
In Germany, empty plastic packaging is generally collected via the collections provided for this purpose. The Umweltbundesamt describes the separation by packaging material. The local rules remain relevant, especially for larger quantities or when it is not a packaging. Packaging foam does not belong in the waste paper collection.
As far as possible separate different materials from each other and remove the contents completely. In case of an unidentified foam layer, ask the manufacturer or the municipal disposer. Commercial establishments should use the agreed collection routes for their waste. Material designations facilitate assignment, but are neither a commitment to local acceptance nor proof that a particular cushion is actually recycled.
