Ceramic cups are sensitive to shocks and punctual pressure. Especially handles and edges can be damaged. They therefore need more than a nice gift box for shipping: A suitable outer packaging, upholstery and reliable fixation are crucial.
Consider the Sensitive Structure
Measure the cup including the handle. Note also prominent decorations and a possible saucer. A tight box can put pressure on the handle. A too large box, on the other hand, allows the contents to slide back and forth without matching filling.
The necessary padding thickness depends on material, weight and construction. A flat-rate reserve of only one or two centimetres is not a general guarantee of protection. Check the complete packaging structure with the actual product.
Protect each piece separately
- Check that the vessel is clean and intact.
- Wrap it in suitable upholstery material.
- Protect handle, edge and other endangered areas without creating tension.
- Position the vessel with distance to the outer wall.
- Fix it with matching inserts or fillers.
A specially matching insert can facilitate positioning. Air cushion film, suitable paper cushions and other materials have different properties. Decorative paper strips alone are not enough for any heavy or fragile ceramic.
Multiple vessels in one package
Cups must not strike unprotected against each other. Upholster each piece and use suitable separation layers or compartment inserts. A saucer is also protected separately. Check the floor and the total load of the carton. The content should not move freely after closing.
Gift packaging and transport packaging
A magnetic box or a box with viewing window can present the cup attractively. A robust external box may be necessary for parcel shipping. Do not adjust the protective structure solely to what the packaging looks like when it is handed over. Recipients should also be able to remove the contents easily and without pulling the handle.
Securely lock and mark
Close the carton according to its design with suitable packing tape. A hint like “Frail” adds the information, but does not replace a cushion. Check the shipping details and keep barcodes easy to read. In case of regular shipping, a documented sample structure with specified quantities of material is worthwhile.
Avoid frequent errors
- Direct contact between ceramic and cardboard wall.
- Unpadded handles or edges.
- Several loose vessels in one box.
- Too weak ground or unreliable closure.
- Decoration filling as the only protective material.
Used cartons can only be used if they are sufficiently stable and undamaged. A carefully packed cup needs a reliable overall structure; a certain carton name alone does not guarantee any damage-free transport.
