A gift box looks more tidy when small items are not loose on the floor. Decorative filling paper can visually close free areas and present the content. With suitable paper, simple strips can be cut themselves. You distinguish between design and transport protection: Self-made paper strips are not a tested upholstery solution for heavy or sensitive goods.
Choose clean paper and matching strips
Use undamaged dry paper without sensitive imprints. Old invoices or documents with personal details are not suitable as decorative filler. In case of light or sensitive gifts, check whether printing ink can be dyed. Packaging paper tends to produce solid strips; silk paper is softer and easy to loosen. Both materials can generate different volumes.
Cut the paper into uniform strips with scissors or a suitable cutting tool. Work on a protected base and hold your fingers from the cutting area. Very fine snippets are easily distributed in the room when unpacked. A little wider strips are easier to handle and can be collected better after handover.
Loose the filling and place the gift
Fold or fold the strips carefully before placing them in the box. A loose basic layer can create a level presentation area. Place the gift on it and distribute more paper sideways. The box should then be closed without any pressure. Too much filler raises the lid and hides the item unnecessarily.
Do not use several highly contrasting materials if the design is to look calm. Two coordinated colors are usually sufficient. For jewellery or small accessories, a suitable inner box prevents items from being lost between the strips. Food or unpacked cosmetics should only come into contact with materials intended for this purpose; decorative paper alone is not a proof of suitability.
Taking into account the need for protection and reuse
Check whether the filling only has to decorate or actually fix the content. Heavy glasses, bottles and technical products require a suitable protective construction. Loose strips can be compressed under load. For shipping, the goods may not beat freely against the cardboard walls even if the movement is careful. A nice presentation is not always enough.
Collect clean strips after unpacking and keep them dry for more gifts. Separate them from strips and foils before they are disposed of. Glitters, varnishes or coatings change the material composition and can make recycling more difficult. A simple paper design with little additional material facilitates both opening and re-use.
