Buy cartons: How to find the right shipping or moving box

A good carton fits the goods, protects them during transport and can be easily processed. Size and price alone are not enough for the selection. Also design, material, weight of the contents and upholstery requirements decide whether a packaging is suitable.

Which source fits?

At a packaging retailer you will often find many inner dimensions, folding types and material qualities. Local businesses with removal or shipping needs can be a practical solution for short-term quantities. However, the specific selection differs from business to business. Check the product data and the packaging unit for online offers before comparing unit prices.

A standardized selection from a few carton sizes is helpful for recurring goods. This reduces search time, cut-out and space requirements at the packing table. For rare special formats, another box or a suitable cut can be useful.

Distinguishing internal and external dimensions

The inner dimension determines the available space for content and upholstery. The external dimension is important for storage and shipping tariffs. Measure the goods including the necessary protective materials. A carton must not be so tight that the article loads the walls; however, large cavities lead to unnecessary filler consumption.

The measurement is often given as length × width × height. Read the respective product description, because manufacturers can use different conventions. In case of uncertainty, a pattern is more reliable than an estimate of the photo.

Large and heavy content

For larger objects, a stronger corrugated board with several shaft layers can be useful. However, a five-well or multi-layer structure is not a general load guarantee. Pay attention to the actual design and load capacity. A dry floor, properly closed flaps and adequate edge protection are also part of the protective structure.

Moving, archive and shipping are different tasks

• Moving boxes: Handy dimensions, durable floor and, where appropriate, suitable handles make it easier to carry. Better distribute books across several smaller boxes.
• Archive boxes: Fit to paper formats, folders or folders and require a well-readable label.
• Boxes: protect during sorting and transport. A decorative gift box may need an additional outer box.
• Punching packages: can be folded quickly and are suitable for standardized packing processes.

Pay attention to parcel machine and shipping service

For the use of a German parcel machine or a certain shipping tariff, check the current maximum dimensions of the specific service. Polish InPost size classes cannot be transferred to other providers. Take into account the closed package with upholstery and not just the naked goods.

Finally, compare the total requirement: cardboard, closure tape, padding, packing time and shipping costs. An inexpensive, suitably dimensioned box is often more economical than an oversized packaging with plenty of filling material. Undamaged used cartons can be reused if stability and closure are still sufficient.
