If you design a gift box or process a cut, you often have to connect cardboard parts to each other. The choice of adhesive depends on the material, the surface and the subsequent use. A clean adhesive seam helps the construction, can make an inappropriate box but not at all loadable. For shipping packaging, the intended closure and loading information of the respective packaging shall also apply.
Matching the substrate and adhesive
Uncoated cardboard absorbs moisture differently than a lacquered or laminated surface. Therefore, check whether the adhesive is indicated for both surfaces to be connected. An adhesive suitable for paper can be insufficiently adhered to with a plastic coating. In the case of unknown material, first use a small residual piece to assess adhesion, deformation and possible stains.
Water-based paper adhesives can often be dosed well, but need time to dry. A thin, even application is usually easier to control than a large drop. A lot of fluid can make thin cardboard wavy. For this reason, manufacturer specifications regarding the order, pressing and drying time are more important than a standard rule for all types of cartons.
Prepare overlaps and fix them cleanly
Plan sufficiently wide adhesive tabs in the cut. The parts should already fit to the desired position without adhesive, so that you do not work against a tense shape later. Remove loose fibers and dust from the contact zone. On a visible outside, test whether adhesive residues can be removed without damaging paint or surface.
Press the connection evenly and hold it in position during the intended drying. A pad prevents the box from sticking to the work surface. Double-sided tape can be practical for certain decorative compounds, but must fit the surface. An adhesive solution for design is not automatically suitable as a supporting or permanent transport connection.
Use hot glue and load carefully
Hot glue can quickly connect when doing appropriate handicraft work, but brings with it hot surfaces and burning risk. Follow the operating instructions and use a suitable storage for the device. On thin, sensitive or coated cardboard, the heat can leave traces. Do not hold the box with your fingers directly on a hot stick.
Check the finished connection only after complete drying or cooling. In the case of heavy gifts or shipping, you should use a sufficiently stable, designed box instead of an improvised construction only to adhere more strongly. Direct food contact requires suitable materials including adhesive. Additional inner packaging may be necessary if this suitability has not been established.
