A simple gift box can be designed with few materials suitable for the occasion. The decisive factor is a harmonious interplay of colour, surface and personal detail. Here you will find ideas for decorating the lid, sides and interior without overloading the carton with more and more accessories.
Choose a color concept for the gift box
First determine whether your design should look calm, festive or playful. For a calm impression, you can combine natural cardboard with a monochrome ribbon. In a patterned box, a small card is often enough as a supplement. Place paper, tape and pendants side by side before you cut or stick to something.
Orient yourself to the person who receives the gift: A favorite color, a short handwritten greeting or a self-designed pendant makes the packaging more personal. You don’t need a large collection of decoration. Scissors, suitable adhesive material and carefully tailored paper are sufficient for many designs.
Design lid with paper, sanding and pendants
A paper banderole sets an accent without covering the entire box. Cut a strip so that it covers the desired sides and fasten the ends as unobtrusive as possible. Then check whether the lid is still easy to open. Glue an elaborate ornament preferably on a removable banderole so that the box can be used later.
With a gift ribbon you can create a color contrast or take back the paper colors. Run the tape evenly around the box and tie a loop that fits the format. A flat pendant offers space for a name or message. Large superstructures have an impressive effect, but require additional space and are more sensitive to transport.
Use homemade and natural decoration
Leaves, stars or simple geometric shapes can be cut from paper remnants. First arrange the parts loosely on the lid and then decide which one you want to attach. Small dry branches can complement a natural design. Make sure to use clean materials and that no sharp ends rise into the interior.
Also decorative stickers or stamps are suitable for recurring motifs. Test paints and adhesives in an inconspicuous place: Some surfaces take on color differently or show adhesive traces. Few clearly placed motifs usually make the design better visible than a completely covered surface.
Matching the interior to the design
Silk paper or paper filler can absorb the outer colours inside. Keep sensitive gift surfaces away from coarse or discoloring decorations. Filling material should fit the shape of the gift and not make it unnecessary to open it. A final check with closed lid shows whether loop, card and filling fit together and everything finds its place without pressure.
