One CD or DVD needs protection from scratches, bending and pressure. A suitable case can be sufficient for storage; a stable outer packaging is added when shipped. Choose both parts according to the disk and the number of items to send.
Put the data carrier in a matching case
Gently touch the disc at the edge or at the opening in the middle. A clean, intended paper or plastic cover keeps other objects away from the surface. It should provide enough space without the disc having to be bent strongly when inserting. Check the inside for loose particles and damaged edges.
Hulls with a viewing window facilitate the recognition of a label. However, the window does not replace a rigid protective layer. A matching plastic box can provide additional mold protection, but must be in good condition. Especially with older boxes it is worth controlling hinges, closure and the holder in the middle.
Separate multiple discs
Pack data carriers individually or use a suitable multiple case. Loose superimposed discs can rub against each other. Also an enclosed card, a key or other accessory should not lie directly on the sensitive surface. Label the case if it makes it easier to assign it.
Arrange multiple packaged discs in such a way that they do not move against each other. A neatly folded intermediate layer or a suitable insert can hold the position. Avoid a very tight stack that comes under pressure when closing the outer packaging. A large collection requires a different packaging than a single data carrier.
Use a sufficiently solid outer packaging
A packaging that fits the case and stabilizes the contents against the usual external loads is suitable for shipping. A fixed envelope or a small box may be more suitable than an ordinary thin envelope. The concrete design decides: A soft air cushion cover does not automatically prevent the bending of a disc.
With a plastic box suitable upholstery layers can support the corners and edges. Keep the content at a distance from the outside wall and close free spaces without squeezing the box. Adhesive tape belongs to the packaging, not to the data carrier. Before closing the door, check if there is still some loose clapping inside.
Make a short final check before sending
Check the closure, label and dimensions of the finished shipment. Remove old shipping stickers if you re-use an intact package. With important own data a separate backup copy makes sense, because no case can exclude any transport loss. After unpacking, a clean, undamaged disc case can be used for storage. Store it in such a way that no heavy objects are permanently pressed on it.
