Packaging paper can often be used as a cover, insert or gift packaging. Only when it is no longer usable does the question arise about the right collection. The actual composition is crucial: a simple sheet of paper behaves differently than a coated or heavily polluted material. Color and shine alone do not reliably indicate which disposal route is planned.
Check for reuse before discarding
Smooth clean arches and check if cracks or wet spots are present. A small damaged edge can often be cut off. Paper already used as a filler can still be useful for another insensitive gift. In the case of sensitive surfaces, check first whether printing ink is dyed off or glue remains stick to the material.
Keep reusable paper dry and separate from dirty packaging. Loose ribbons and pendants can also be collected for a later occasion. Remove personal shipping data before you pass on a case. Reuse is only useful if the material still fulfils its required function; a wet, unstable bow should not take over a new protective task.
Distinguishing Paper, Coatings and Additional Material
In general, clean packaging made of paper and cardboard is collected in Germany via the waste paper collection. Plastic or composite packaging has a different collection route. The Umweltbundesamt explains the basic material separation. The local references and the specific material declaration remain decisive for the decision.
Separate easily detachable foils, tapes and larger adhesive strips from the paper. Especially with metallised or laminated gift papers is worth a look at the manufacturer’s specifications. A brown or paper-like surface does not necessarily mean that the entire sheet consists only of paper. Coated materials should therefore not be classified solely according to their external design.
Taking into account pollution and local rules
Highly polluted paper requires a different handling than a clean packaging. Do not use such sheets again for food or sensitive products. Inform your municipal disposer if the composition is unclear. For larger commercial quantities, other collection or withdrawal solutions may be provided than for small household quantities.
Fold paper space-saving without sticking different types of materials firmly to a bundle. For future gifts, simple bows and easy-to-solve closures can facilitate separation. A claimed recyclability of a packaging is not a substitute for the right collection route. Well-recognizable material and an economical combination of components make the decision easier after unpacking.
