A thin sheet of silk paper changes the first impression of a packaging. It covers the contents, sets a color accent and separates sensitive surfaces. To ensure that the result also works during shipping, decoration and transport protection must be planned separately. Silk paper does not replace shock absorbing padding.
Which variety fits the content?
Smooth, slightly glossy paper looks different than a matte surface. Names MG and MF describe different surface finishes: MG stands for Machine Glazed, MF for Machine Finished. The concrete pattern remains decisive. Check grip, transparency and behavior when folding before ordering a larger amount.
Grammature, color and arch dimensions must also fit together. A very light bow can be placed softly around small articles, but can tear on sharp edges. For heavy items it requires a suitable inner packaging. For jewellery, textiles and bright surfaces, you should pay attention to possible color transfer. Acid-free qualities are interesting for certain sensitive materials; the corresponding property must be explicitly specified.
Design a gift box step by step
- Place the arch in the open box. The ends should easily cover the contents later.
- Put the article on a suitable sheet. In addition, fix heavy or fragile parts.
- Fold the overhanging sides to the middle without firmly pressing the article.
- Close the paper with a small sticker or paper banderole.
- Check whether the lid closes without pressure and the contents remain in place while moving carefully.
Use colors specifically
Pink, red or a strong brand colour can look good in a simple box. Limit yourself to one or two main colors, if the content itself is already colorful. White or natural paper is suitable for a quiet appearance. Dark colours can cover the contents, but are not proven light protection packaging.
A sample package helps compare paper, filling material and box in daylight. Screen colors give the actual tone only approximate. Batch differences can occur when reordering; a common order is useful for matching sets.
Bows or rollers?
Precut sheets save time with recurring box formats. Rolls offer more freedom in different sizes, but require a clean cutting station. Compare the costs per usable arc and take into account the cut. Store paper dry, clean and protected from direct sun.
After unpacking
Clean, uncoated silk paper can often be reused and then disposed of via waste paper. Coatings, glitter and heavy dirt can require a different assignment. Orient yourself to the local separation instructions. Few well-tuned materials facilitate the re-use of the receiver.
