Some products change by light or have to be stored in a light-protected position according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The packaging should then not only intercept impacts, but also provide the necessary light barrier. A dark color alone is not sufficient proof for this.
Clear the requirement first
Check if it’s about visible light, UVRadiation or a concrete storage condition. Photos, prints, cosmetic products and other goods have different requirements. Apply the specifications of the product manufacturer and distinguish between short transport time and long-term storage.
In the case of food, medicinal products or other specially regulated products, the packaging must fit in addition to the respective requirements. A general packaging guide does not replace product-specific approval.
Eye-tight packaging
Closed cartons and opaque paper covers can reduce direct light incidence. It is important to have complete coverage, suitable closures and sufficiently overlapping areas. Visible windows, openings and very thin shells can let light through. A decorative box with a window therefore fulfils a different task than a completely closed protective packaging.
Colored film can pass through less light than transparent film. However, it should be noted that the UVAchieved barrier must emerge from the data. Metallised special sleeves also have different properties. Choose them according to proven suitability for the goods.
Photos and sensitive surfaces
In addition to the light shielding, material compatibility is important for pictures and photographs. Suitable covers separate the surface from other objects; sturdy folders or cartons provide kink protection. Glue should not get directly to a valuable image. Materials intended for this purpose are eligible for longer archiving.
Combining protection functions
- Light barrier: suitable closed or opaque cover.
- Shock protection: suitable cushions and fixation.
- Buckle protection: stable surface or folder for flat objects.
- Moisture protection: a separately suitable structure, if necessary.
- Temperature guidance: a solution designed for this purpose if the product requires it.
Air cushion foil is a padding material, but usually transparent. It cannot therefore replace a necessary light barrier on its own. A black outer bag does not automatically protect against shocks or temperature changes.
Check the finished bodywork
Pack a pattern and control seams, flaps and viewing areas. Make sure that the inner protective layer is not damaged immediately when opened. Keep light sensitive goods also before dispatch and after receipt according to manufacturer’s specifications. A suitable packaging is only part of the entire storage and transport chain.
