Buy strong double-sided adhesive tape: what matters?

Double-sided adhesive tape connects two surfaces without visible screws or nails. “Strong is not a sufficient product description. A belt must match the ground, load and planned duration of the connection.

The design makes a difference

Thin foil strips are suitable for comparatively smooth connections. Paper or fabric carriers may be intended for other tasks. Foam tapes can compensate for certain unevennesses, but require more space. Gel and special tapes in turn have their own properties. Compare carrier material, thickness and adhesive, instead of treating each version as a universal assembly tape.

Check the substrate and load

• Is the surface smooth, rough, porous or sensitive?
• Should the tape adhere to plastic, metal, glass, wood or paper?
• Does the force work permanently or only for a short time?
• Is the connection loaded by train, shear or detachment?
• Is moisture, heat, cold or sunlight expected?

A load indication applies only under the conditions described by the manufacturer. From a general product photo it is not possible to determine how safe a particular component is kept. A suitable design and, where appropriate, other fastening devices are required for safety-relevant or heavy fastenings.

Permanent or removable connection?

For temporary decorations and exhibitions, a removable tape can be useful. A permanent assembly tape has other targets and may only be removed with residues or damage. Check the information on the distance already at the time of purchase, especially for rental rooms and sensitive surfaces.

Clean processing

The substrate must be clean, dry and suitable according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Cut the tape appropriately, place it without unnecessary wrinkles and press it evenly. Note the processing temperature and a time required to full load capacity if necessary. Touch the adhesive surface as little as possible.

Test a new combination of tape and material with a pattern. The initial adhesion immediately after pressing is not the same as the later strength. Similarly, a fresh paint can have different properties than a completely hardened coating.

Where to buy and how to compare?

With a dealer, several widths, lengths and adhesive variants can be compared. Compare price per usable meter with the same width and quality. A cheap tape that doesn’t fit the task causes extra work. Keep the product data and processing instructions so that a successful application remains reproducible later.
