A matching carton starts with reliable dimensions. For the content, the usable interior, for the dispatch, counts the completely closed outer packaging. Those who keep both data apart avoid too tight boxes and unnecessarily large packages.
Length × Width × Height
The information is often given as length × width × height. Length and width describe the base area, the height the distance between the bottom and the lid. For special designs, the dimensional convention may differ. Therefore, read the product description and pay attention to the hint “Internal dimensions” or “Outside dimensions”.
Determine internal dimensions
- Fold the carton completely in its intended form.
- Measure the usable distance between the opposite interior walls.
- Determine the height from the finished inner floor to the bottom of the closed lid.
- Consider flaps, inserts and reinforced areas that reduce usable space.
Use an inch stick or a suitable measuring tape. Keep the measuring device straight and don’t push the walls apart. In the case of slanted or strongly rounded shapes, a sample inserting of the content also helps.
Measure external dimensions on the finished package
Pack and close the box as it should actually be shipped. Then measure the largest extent of each direction. Protruding edges, arched lids or an additional shell can increase the outside dimension. Therefore, the finished package size cannot always be reliably derived from the inner dimension alone.
Plan space for upholstery
Measure the goods including the necessary protections. Sensitive objects need a distance from the outside wall and a fixation that prevents movement. Too little space can compress the padding and create pressure on the contents. An oversized carton, on the other hand, requires a lot of filler and can easily deform.
An example of how 300 × 200 × 150 mm is not a general carton for a particular product group. Whether clothing, cosmetics or electronics fit in depends on the actual shape, quantity and protection requirement. The weight also has to match the carton quality.
Search for similar dimensions
At neopak24.com, the dimensional search can display similar cartons within a tolerance of ten percent. A Search for 300 mm takes into account: 270 until 330 mm. This tolerance facilitates finding alternatives, but is not a statement that each box found fits your goods. Check all internal dimensions and the upholstery of the specific product.
Compare shipping tariffs separately
The maximum dimensions of a parcel vending machine or shipping tariff are part of the selection of the shipping service. Polish InPost classes from the original are not taken over as German sizes. Check the outside dimension, weight and rules for special shapes in the selected service. Few suitably standardized carton sizes then facilitate the entire packing process.
