Select garbage bags: sizes, material and closures

A suitable garbage bag sits safely in the container, can be closed and can withstand the intended load. The litre is a first clue. Whether the bag really fits, however, also depends on width, height, floor shape and material thickness.

Volume is not equal to Fit

Measure your container and take into account the edge over which the bag is flipped. A too short bag slips in easily. A very large bag, on the other hand, can form wrinkles and can be handled unnecessarily difficult. Two bags with the same litre can have different dimensions.

35 Liter	Smaller household containers, depending on their shape.
60 Liter	Larger containers and more extensive clean-up work.
120 until 160 Liter	Voluminous, rather light waste and larger collection containers.

These examples do not describe a guaranteed fit or permissible load. Always compare the actual dimensions and the manufacturer’s details.

Differentiating light and heavy waste

For light office or bathroom waste, a material other than moist or angular remains is often sufficient. Film thickness, welds and stretching behavior influence the load capacity. Tip items can also push through powerful bags. Use a suitable container and the intended disposal for such contents.

There are special bags for building debris. Their load limits must be observed: A large bag must not be filled with heavy mineral residues alone. The general assurance contained in the original that a building bag could not tear is expressly not taken over here.

Pull tape, handles or simple edge?

A drawbar facilitates closing and can be used as a handle if the product is intended for this purpose. Bags with handles can be knotted together. With simple bags you need enough free edge for a secure closure. Do not fill a bag so far that it can only be closed under tension.

Taking waste separation into account when selecting

The colour of a purchased bag does not automatically determine the disposal route. Follow the rules of your municipality. Plastic bags, for example, do not simply belong in the biotonnes with biowaste; even sachets called compostable are not accepted everywhere. Paper and glass should not be delivered with an unsuitable plastic cover.

Plan a bag size that matches your emptying rhythm. Regular emptying, a clean container and a realistic load are more important than a nominal volume as large as possible. This makes the removal easier and the material consumption remains manageable.
